Western celebrates Yuri's Night
Human spaceflight became a reality 49 years ago with the launch of a bell-shaped capsule, Vostok 1,carrying Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. While people today may be more familiar with the Space Shuttle, a celebration has built up around marking the first human to leave the bounds of Earth.Yuri’s Night, which began quietly in 2001 to mark the history of human space travel, has grown to more than 216 events in 47 countries – including Los Angeles, Stockholm, Antarctica, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Houston, the International Space Station, and right here at Western.
Marshall named Campaign Coach of Ronald McDonald House
Western Mustangs football head coach Greg Marshall has been named the "campaign coach" of Ronald McDonald House Southwestern Ontario. Marshall and members of the Mustangs football team, "the campaign all-stars," will be involved in helping to raise funds and awareness for the Ronald McDonald House. The charity hopes to raise $8.5 million dollars in this campaign, and needs $1.3 million to reach that goal.
Relationships: We Can't Live Without Them
A new lecture series, presented by Department of Psychology faculty members in April, will help shed some light on how we influence and are influenced by each other, and how social relationships have the power to both hurt and heal. “Relationships: We Can't Live Without Them,” includes three weekly 45 to 60 minute presentations followed by a 30 to 45 minute Q&A session at the London Central Library (251 Dundas Street) in the Stevenson and Hunt Room A. Two hours of free validated parking is available in Citi Plaza during library hours. Topics, dates and and presenters are as follows:
The Geography of Hope
“Would this – this place, this machine, this social system or way of life – be capable of continuing on its present course for the foreseeable future without exhausting the planet’s ability to sustain human life at something like the current population and quality of life?” This is the question author and journalist Chris Turner asked before traveling the globe in search of hope for a sustainable future. Turner comes to Western to discuss his book, "The Geography of Hope: A Tour of the World We Need," on Wednesday, April 7, 4:30-6 p.m. in the University Community Centre, Room 146.
